We often seem to be talking about productivity, but not doing much to actually increase it. If you are, like myself, the owner of an SMB, you know just how much productivity can affect the bottom line. Even if you think you are doing your best to do better in this field, you may not be doing much at all, or your tactics simply may not be working for your employees.
I sometimes feel that a mere decade ago, the world of business was unrecognizable. Consumers are demanding more and more every passing month, marketing is nothing like it used to be, and it can be difficult at times to stay on top of everything. The workplace keeps shifting to the more remote and the digital, working hours are being cut and while you may often feel you are trying to build a sandcastle in a storm on quicksand, you can improve the way you do business, and how productive you yourself and your teams are. The fact is, your employees need to be happy in order to give it their all, and the best among them will quickly find what they are looking for somewhere else, if you can’t provide.
Here are a few tips on how to increase the productivity in your SMB:
ENCOURAGE YOUR EMPLOYEES
Even if you think otherwise, your employees are the most important part of your business, and their productivity or lack thereof will directly influence your bottom line. But that is not the reason to continue encouraging them.
If you help your team become the very best versions of themselves, they will want to be active participants in the future growth of your SMB. Employees who are more engaged are also more efficient, and more loyal, which means their performance will increase, and they will work better together.
What you need to be doing is praising the hard work your employees are putting in, and rewarding them for it. And not just with salary bumps and Christmas bonuses. If you provide them with the right environment and the right tools to grow, professionally and as people, they will feel more appreciated and glad to be a part of the family. However, not everyone can be motivated in the same way, so make sure you find a personal approach to each of your employees. A good HR department will help you achieve this.
Even if your employees are happy, they won’t be productive in an environment that is preventing them from being productive. You need to provide the right structure and the right communication channels for them to be able to find a solutions for every problem.
What I mean by this is that you need to have the right managers and the right human resources officers there to help things run smoothly. If the manager is not top notch, you will not know what is going on with your team. You also need to hire the right accountant, to help you take care of the financial and legal side of business, and make sure your employees are taken care of in that respect. You can trust Gilmour & Co. to do this for you. Having a great legal team on board will make sure all parties feel safe, and can work without worrying about anything but their current project.
MAKE PLANS FOR THE FUTURE
If you are to be productive, you need to plan your future right. If you create clear plans, milestones, and map out the road to success, you will know just what needs to be done when, and nothing will fall through the cracks. This will also mean everyone knows how which project is standing, and you will be able to prioritize accordingly.
Make it a point to include your team in your plans for growth. If they know which direction you are heading in, they will know if they wish to be a part of that vision or not, and you will know whom you can count on to stay with you for the long haul. Ask for input, and you’ll be surprised what kinds of ideas pop up, many of which you may not have thought of yourself.
